Syslog

Every one of the 560+ Cisco wireless access points (APs) on Dartmouth campus has been configured to send a “syslog” message to a central server in Kiewit Computing Services every time something interesting happens, notably, when a wireless device associates with the access point or roams to another access point. Kiewit uses this data for its own administrative purposes, and allows us to obtain a copy of the daily log for research purposes. Aruba-brand APs have been configured to send their syslog data directly to our server. Each entry in the log contains the time of day, the MAC address of the device (a 48-bit globally unique identifier for that device’s wireless interface), and the hostname of the access point (such as “baker7-ap”, which is in Baker Library). Some entries contain the IP address or DDNS name of the device; the DDNS name sometimes contains the device owner’s name if they have chosen to configure their device that way. We collect syslog data from every wireless access point.
